Materials Needed

  • Wood Pallets (4-5 should be enough, depending on the size)
  • Hammer
  • Safety goggles and gloves
  • Saw (power or manual)
  • Nails or wood screws
  • Sandpaper
  • Outdoor-quality paint or varnish
  • Soil, plants, or flowers

How To Build The Planter Bench

  1. Start by selecting the pallets and start by making the bench.
  2. Normally, to make a simple bench, you'll need 2 pieces for the sides, 4 pieces for the seating planks, and 2 pieces to serve as the backrest.
  3. Cut your wood pieces according to their designated roles (sides, seating, and backrest).
  4. Assemble the seat first. Lay the four seating planks parallel next to each other and nail/screw two support pieces across them - at the front and the back.
  5. Stand the seat on its side and attach one side piece - ensuring it's flush with both ends of the seating planks. Do the same for the other side.
  6. Attach the backrest pieces to the back of the seat, nailing/screwing at the two side pieces.
  7. Decide on the size of the boxes, but make sure they are not too heavy for the bench.
  8. Create a square or a rectangle, and then cut four pieces of wood: two pieces of the same length and two of the same width.
  9. Using the cut pieces, create a box without a bottom. Ensure that it's sturdy enough to hold the soil and the plants.
  10. Repeat the process to build a second planter box.
  11. Attach one of the prepared planter boxes at either end of the bench, using nails or screws to ensure they're firmly held.
  12. Use sandpaper to smooth all surfaces, corners, edges, and especially areas where splinters occur.
  13. Paint or varnish the bench and planter boxes in a color you choose to protect the wood and add a personal touch. Be sure to use outdoor-quality products for durability.

Plant your favorite flowers or herbs in the planter boxes, and your planter bench is ready!
